Obituary

Guy Darrell Aul, age 71, of Hot Springs, SD passed away in his home on February 16,
2022. Born on October 28, 1950 in Chicago, IL to single mother Dolores Brandt, Guy was
blessed to have his maternal grandparents Henry and Bertha LaBant complete his family in his
early years. It was from grandpa that Guy began to appreciate the beauty of wood as his
grandfather worked to create pianos. Guy's kindergarten teacher was the first to notice Guy's
artistic ability which flowed naturally for him throughout his entire life.

Guy's mother married Henry Aul when Guy was six years old and he became the oldest
of four boys. Being the oldest, he shared household chores and helped raise his three brothers
who always looked up to him. Guy's favorite recreation was being a Boy Scout. Early on he was
enchanted by nature and wildlife and engaged in hiking and camping to his heart's content.
Guy loved life in the country.

Guy graduated from Lane Technical High School and later DeVry Institute of Technology,
a straight "A" student, with an Associates degree, specializing in electronics. One of his projects
was to build a stereo amplifier, which later coupled with a state of the art speaker system
"shook the walls" at home, much to the dismay of neighbors. Guy loved music of the 70's, his
forever favorite. Guy worked a part time job across the street from his childhood home at
R.S.Owens & Co., "world's largest manufacturer of premier awards". He was a jack of all trades, filled almost every factory position over several years and soon brought into employment hisgirlfriend, brothers, sisters-and-brothers-in-law. Guy's first and, for a time, only mode of
transportation was a Honda 150 motorcycle, later upgraded to a BSA. He rode his bike to school all winter in themost frigid Chicago weather, favoring a cold ride to waiting for a bus.

His first car was a very distinctive purple 1957 Ford, tricked out with red shag carpeting and
glass packs. There was no mistaking Guy Aul, noticeable in every respect. His favorite pastime
was cruising Milwaukee Avenue with frequent stops at Superdawg Drive-In, complete with car
hops, where he feasted on his staple: Chicago-style hot dogs nestled in accordion fries.
Guy met Delores Gallas in February, 1969 who later accepted his marriage proposal to
make him the "happiest guy in the world". He sold his motorcycle to buy the engagement ring.
They were wed in September 1973 and were married for 31 years. Uncle Sam came knocking in 1970 with a low lottery number and Guy chose the Air Force Reserves to fulfill his duty to country. Basic training was completed at Lackland AFB, San Antonio.

Guy used his education well and was employed by Western Electric and later Cook
Electric with particular research in the telecommunications field. Several patents were attained
with Guy's expertise and inventive abilities. He was able to enjoy some working field trips to
Canada, again appreciating country life. Guy continued to serve his country for seven years as
an Air Force Reservist for the 36 th Medical Service Squadron Supporting Healthcare Service and was called upon by the Commander to share his artistic ability by creating a new Unit patch. He served as Staff Sergeant, E-5, and loved travels to summer camp in Texas, California, and
Alaska. Boy Scout adventure and passion for nature was always in his blood.
Given the opportunity to switch gears in 1975, Guy ventured into the printing business
and became partners with his father-in-law Henry Gallas. He used his artistic talents especially
on the drawing board and in the darkroom for Andrews Decal Co., Chicago, IL. His interest inthe investment field, commodities in particular, began as a hobby and soon became a passion.
He moved on to purchase a seat on the Mid-America Commodity Exchange and became a floor
trader for his own interest, calling out "buys and sells". His passion for watching the markets
lasted his entire life. Markets being ruthless and expecting his firstborn child, Guy returned to
the less-stressful printing business. This time he partnered with his father Henry Aul and
purchased Woeller, Inc. It became a family business and also included his brothers, Henry and
Kurt Aul. They had their niche in downtown Chicago, as photographers referred their fashion
models to Guy to print the city's finest model composites. Their reputation was impeccable.
After several years, Guy branched off with friend/partner Ed Zmorzynski to create a new
business, Artisan Printing and Lithography, which produced highest quality commercial printing.
Guy was never too busy for hobbies which included stained glass, photography, and his home
darkroom. He always created his own greeting cards with extraordinary caricatures, specific for
every occasion, for all loved ones. On the back of every creation was his signature "Aulmark".
His last creation was for his second wife Suzanne's birthday in January 2022.

Guy became a very proud father to Brandon James in April 1985 and Jetaime Brandy in
August 1987, intentional home births. In 1986 when Guy's sister-in-law Nancy Kasprzak left her
first husband in California and became a single mother, Guy quickly invited her and infant son
Spencer Wright Woodward into his family in Des Plaines, IL. Guy was mentor and father figure
to Spencer. All three children grew up loved and cared for, influenced by Guy's abilities,
talents, and passions, passed on to them to this day. Guy loved traveling with his family. They went on several cruises, but road trips to the country were his favorite, often to Wisconsin. In 1996 he read in a motorcycle magazine that "the Black Hills are beautiful". On his Harley, he led his family in the car, and fell in love with the Black Hills immediately upon entering. Plans ensued for Guy's life dream. He found land that he loved, reminding him of his Boy Scout adventures, and placed a deposit of $100 to insure this piece of heaven would be his. After selling business and home in 2000, Guy retired and moved his family to rural Hot Springs to build the log home of his dreams. He purchased a new mobile home and set it 1/3 mile from the building site. Guy's dream came true, all of his talents and passions came into play: his love of country life, artistic, mechanical, and construction abilities, his love of wood. Guy was the architect, carpenter, plumber, and electrician, building his dream log home. Except for excavation, concrete footing, and some help before winter with putting a roof on, the home was completely built by Guy and Delores. Through a blessing from God no one completely understood at the time, Guy and Delores divorced in 2004, but remained friends. Guy reconnected with Suzanne Bastian, a teenage girlfriend, and they married in 2005. Everyone continued to work together on the log home. Guy repaired computers and loved sharing his knowledge with friends and family via emails containing everything from politics, religion, world happenings, jokes and of course his country dream fulfilled. Guy's legacy lives on forever.

Guy is survived by his wife Suzanne, his children Brandon (Danielle) Aul of Hoboken, NJ,
his daughter Jetaime (Tanner Massee) Aul formerly of the Chicago, IL area, his son Spencer
(Maureen) Woodward of Burlington, WI, brothers Henry (Lynette) Aul of Crystal Lake, IL and
Keith Aul of Fox River Grove, IL, brothers-and sisters-in-law, friends Mike and Delores Duffy, and more loving family and friends. Scattering of ashes behind the home he built, on the land he
loved, will be at a later date
