Obituary

Hansel "Hal" Alfred Hunter, formerly of Custer, South Dakota, passed away August 15, 2023 at the age
of 88 at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home in Hot Springs, South Dakota.

He was predeceased by: his parents, Ramie Lawrence Hunter and Zelma Baisden Hunter; his siblings,
Henry Hunter, Heschel "Doc" Hunter, Roberta Harbison, Harry Franklin Hunter, and Virginia Sue Maison;
his wife, Carolyn Ruth Reese Hunter; his children, Phillip Lee Hunter and Shelia Rae Hunter.

He is survived by: his siblings, Herman Hunter of Mason, OH, Homer Hunter of Stony Bottom, WV. He
also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and many, many friends.

Hal was born December 4, 1934 in Sharples, Logan County, West Virginia. He was raised in Boone
County, West Virginia. He entered the U.S. Air Force December 22, 1956 and received an honorable
discharge December 21, 1962. During that time, he served in South Dakota, Morocco, and California.
He worked in the State of California prison system, Southern Pacific Pipeline Co., Custer County Planning Department, and as an independent contractor.

On January 12, 1957, he married Carolyn Ruth Reese at Indianapolis, Indiana. They were married until
her death on January 11, 2021.

Military graveside rites will be held at the Custer Cemetery on Monday, August 21 at 10:00 a.m. MDT.
