Harold Eugene "Gene" Hoover, age 76, of Custer, SD, passed away on April 14, 2015, at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice South Dakota Veterans Home in Hot Springs, after a long battle with cancer.
Gene was born on October 19, 1938, in Holdenville, OK, to Albert and Evelyn (Brooker) Hoover. He graduated from high school in Texas. Following graduation, Gene enlisted in the US Air Force and served as part of the 4926th Test Squadron (ARDC) from September 12, 1955 – February 27, 1959. He served in multiple operations involving nuclear testing and decontamination of air craft and troops.
After being honorably discharged, Gene entered the Police Academy and served as a Police Officer in San Angelo, Texas, from 1962 – 1965. He then moved to Henderson, Nevada to serve in the police department until he retired in 1983 as a Sergeant after being wounded on the job. While in Henderson, Gene became a certified SCUBA diver and worked on the underwater recovery team in Clark County, Nevada
Gene married Judy (Reisenauer) Hoover on February 16, 1983. The couple moved to Custer, SD, in 1985, where they purchased Hoover Trailer Court. Along with running the trailer court, Gene worked as a handyman, Custer Deputy Sheriff and continued to learn from a local electrician.
Gene was a member of Mason's Custer City Lodge, A&A Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Shriners International and General Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star as well as the Dakota Territory Gun Collectors Association, Inc. He enjoyed fishing, riding his motorcycles and participating in gun shows.
Gene is survived by his wife, Judy Hoover of Custer; son, James (Gladys) Hoover of Las Vegas, NV; daughter, Kathy (Phil) Henry of Ely, NV; sister, Darlene Sanders of Whitener, TX; three grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and beloved dog, Herbie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, James "Buddy" Hoover.
Memorial services will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 17, 2015, at Chamberlain McColley's Funeral Home in Custer, with Pastor Deb Grismer officiating. Military honors will be provided by Custer Veterans Honor Guard and the Ellsworth US Air Force.
