Harold Dean Konrath passed away April 17, 2011, at the Fort Meade Medical Center Ft. Meade, SD, at the age of 79.
Harold was born August 22, 1931, to Herman J. Konrath and Dora C. (Hanson) at Watson, Saskatchewan, Canada. At the age of eight the family moved to Hot Springs, SD, and later to Ardmore, SD, where he graduated from the eighth grade. Harold learned to run heavy equipment at a very young age which he did until he went into the Marines at the age of 18. He served during the Korean Conflict in Japan. Coming home he ran heavy equipment in South Dakota, Wyoming and Nebraska and made a home in Casper, WY. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union until retirement in 1994. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW for fifty years.
Harold has resided at the State Veterans Home in Hot Springs where he was well cared for these last years. He was usually happy and had a positive attitude, very seldom complained. He was a very generous person and always cared for his fellow man.
He is survived by his wife, Winnie of Yachats, OR; a stepson, David Barker and wife of Lummi, WA; stepdaughter, Janet McKinney and husband Greg; three step-grandchildren; sister, Verna Barker of Edgemont, SD; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Harold was preceded in death by his mother and father, Herman and Dora Konrath; sisters, Elaine Rice; Donna Lowe; brothers, Wilford (Rocky) Konrath and Gordon Konrath.
Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 29, 2011, at St. James Catholic Church in Edgemont with Fr. Peter Kovarik officiating. Harold's sister, Donna and brother, Gordon will share the memorial services in Edgemont. Following the service Donna will be interred at the Edgemont Cemetery. Harold and Gordon will be interred at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD, at 2:30 p.m., Friday, April 29, 2011. Military Honors will be provided by the South Dakota National Guard and Sturgis Veterans Honor Guards.
