Obituary for Harold "Butch" Kruse
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Harold "Butch" Kruse, aged 83, who left us peacefully on December 18, 2025, with his family by his side. Butch was born on January 20, 1942, in Hot Springs, South Dakota, where he spent most of his childhood. He later lived in Chadron and Minden, Nebraska; Altoona, Iowa; Broomfield, Colorado; and eventually retired in Hill City, South Dakota.
Butch was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Karen Kruse; their two children, Cindi (married to Jeremy) and Kent (married to Traci); his grandson Austin (married to Megan); two great-grandchildren; brother Ralph (married to Sandy), brother George, and several nieces and nephews. Butch was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Frances Kruse, and his in-laws, Frank and Irene Ziller.
He was actively involved in the Jaycees and the Masons, organizations that reflected his commitment to community service and personal growth. Through the Jaycees, Butch participated in numerous projects aimed at improving the quality of life in his community and fostering leadership among young adults. His dedication to the Masons highlighted his values of charity, brotherhood, and support for those in need, as he worked alongside fellow members to contribute to various charitable initiatives.
Butch had a diverse and fulfilling career that showcased his versatility, dedication, and connections within the community. He began his professional life with Northwestern Bell and later transitioned to AT&T, where he worked as a telecommunications instructor. Upon retirement, Butch served as a fireman with the 1880 Train in Hill City, relishing the opportunity to share the area's rich history and create lasting memories for visitors. He also worked as a bartender at the Harney Lounge in Hill City, quickly becoming a beloved figure among locals and tourists alike.
Music was a defining aspect of Butch's life. He played the trumpet for many years and showcased his talent in his dance band, the Dukes of Rhythm. He was a proud honorary member of the Hill City High School pep band, contributing to the school's spirited atmosphere at events. Butch also participated in the New Horizons Band in Rapid City, where he shared his passion for music with fellow musicians and performed at community events for many years, leaving behind a legacy of rhythm and harmony.
Additionally, Butch had a lifelong fascination with amateur radio, becoming an avid ham operator who loved connecting with people across the globe. His call sign, N0DUX, became well-known as he participated in local and national events, often sharing tips, stories, and camaraderie with fellow enthusiasts. This hobby not only provided him with hours of enjoyment but also deepened his appreciation for technology and communication. Butch frequently organized and participated in field days and contests, enjoying both the technical aspects of radio operation and the friendships formed within the ham radio community. His enthusiasm for this hobby also allowed him to mentor newcomers, sharing his knowledge and passion for radio communication.
Butch was a proud member of the Gold Dust Chapter of the Vintage Motor Car Club of America, which promotes the enjoyment of vintage cars through their preservation and exhibition. He cherished his 1926 Model A and 1950 Willys Jeepster, connecting with fellow enthusiasts and showcasing his passion for history and touring.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. A celebration of Butch's life will be held at a later date to be announced. In place of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Hill City Ambulance at PO Box 671, Hill City, SD. Chamberlain McColley's Funeral Homes is overseeing arrangements.
