Harold Everly Maudlin,91, passed away peacefully at Colonial Manor in Custer on Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2010.
Harold was born on the Maudlin ranch in Custer County, SD on March 8, 1919 to Walt and Lucinda (Stevens) Maudlin. After graduating from Custer High School, he served with the United States Army during WWII from 1941 to his honorable discharge in 1945 with a tour of duty in North Africa. Returning to the States, he married his high school sweetheart, Florence (Flo) Borgen. After 10 years of marriage, they had a son, David Maudlin.
Throughout the years, he ranched and logged with his father and brother in Custer; he hauled gas from Rawlins, WY to Custer; he owned and operated the Marshall Wells Hardware store in Custer with his brother-in-law, Norman Borgen; and then together, he and Flo purchased and operated the Corner Market grocery store in Hill City.
Harold proudly served as President of the Hill City Chamber of Commerce, as President of the Hill City School Board, as a member of the American Legion and as a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge in Custer.
Harold is survived by his son, David (Karen) Maudlin, Hill City; his sister, Doris Brandt, Fargo, ND; his sister-in-law, Betty (Borgen) Flanagan, Custer; and his brother-in-law, Odean (Becky) Borgen, Custer. He is preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his brother, LeRoy Maudlin, and his sisters, Pearl Kaufman, and Edith Yancey.
A Memorial Service is planned for 9 a.m. Saturday, December 4, at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer. Following the service, the family will hold a Memorial Gathering at the Hill City Senior Center. A private burial will be held at a later date.
