Harry Thomas 'H.T.' Sly, age 90, of Hot Springs, SD, passed away Friday, April 8, 2011, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Hot Springs.
Harry was born August 3, 1920 on a farm in Platte, SD to Earl H. and Lucy H. (Mills) Sly. He was the oldest of four children. He was raised on a farm six miles north and three miles east of Platte and attended the Carroll TWP country school that was one mile north and half a mile west of his home. He received schooling there for eight years and attended the Platte High School for four years, graduating in 1938.
In 1942 Harry partnered with his father in Earl H. Sly & Son's in Animal Agriculture. He served in the United States Navy in the Naval Construction Battalion from March 1945 to May 1946. He returned to Platte and started working with his father on the farm.
In 1948 he engaged in animal agriculture for himself and in 1968 he took his father's beef cattle on shares. Then in 1977 Harry bought his home place and farmed until 1986. From 1987 through 1988 he spent the winter in Zapata, TX near the northern bank of Rio Grande River and spent his springs, summers and falls in Platte.
Harry moved into the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home on May 15, 1992. He enjoyed photography and traveling. He served as Carroll TWP Clerk for many years, was active in soil conservation with the Farm Bureau of Charles Mix County, he was a member of the American Legion Post #115 in Platte, SD and belonged to the Crop Improvement Association.
Survivors include brother, Kenneth Sly; sister, Beth Chastka and nieces and nephews.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joy Knudsen, and one nephew, Daniel W. Sly.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home Auditorium with Chaplain Loyd Nielson officiating.
Committal services will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 14, 2011 in the Platte Cemetery in Platte, SD. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post #115.
