Obituary

Helmut 'Hal' Peter Augustin, age 83, of Hot Springs, SD, went to be with the Lord on January 6, 2013, at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD.

Hal was born December 25, 1929, in Heidelberg, West Germany to Peter and Elsa (Wappler) Augustin and immigrated to the United States in July of 1951. He married Dorann B. Wagner on July 18, 1953, in Racine, WI. Hal enlisted in the U.S. Army in December of 1953, serving in Company B 8th Engineer as a Battalion Combat Construction Specialist, retiring from the active Army Reserves in 1983.

Hal and Dorann raised their four children in the Brookfield, WI, area where they owned and operated LaViolette Refrigeration. They then moved to Island Park, ID, in 1983 and lived there for fourteen years. During that time Hal owned and operated Pond's Lodge and Island Park Sports & Liquor. He was an active member of the community where he started the first Chamber of Commerce in 1983 and volunteered many hours with the Island Park Volunteer Fire Department and Fremont County Search & Rescue.

In 1997, they relocated to Hot Springs where Hal continued his community service and was nominated twice for Citizen of the Year. Because of his love for horses, Hal Volunteered many hours at the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary for fifteen years. His love and passion of woodworking can be seen throughout the Hot Springs area. Hal was an avid Green Bay Packer fan, loved snowmobiling and horseback riding. Hel will be missed for his community service, willingness to help others and for being a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Hal's patriotic beliefs inspired him to be an active member of the VFW Post 1640. He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Hot Springs.

Hal is survived by his wife, Dorann of Hot Springs; daughter, Debra (Robert) Fitzsimmons of Pocatello, ID; sons, Stephen (Laurie) Augustin of Island Park, ID; Douglas (Susan) Augustin of Belleville, WI; Todd (Anna) Augustin of Missoula, MT; sister, Eleanor Wagner of Grant Pass, OR; nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; a niece as well as a nephew.

Hal was preceded in death by his parents and one great granddaughter, Abigale Augustin.

Committal services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 18, 2013, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD, with Pastor Bill Russow officiating.
