Herbert E. Holmes, 77, of Custer, SD passed away Thursday, January 25, 2007 at the Custer Regional Senior Care Center in Custer.
Herbert was born April 27, 1929 in Rapid City, SD to Martin Arthur Holmes and Sarah Hazel (Hamm) Holmes. He was raised and lived in Rapid City until he met his wife, Violet (Kester) Waddington. At this time, they moved to Custer where Herbert worked in the lumber industry from 1963 until his retirement in December of 1991 with the closing of Custer Lumber. He enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends, especially cribbage and pinochle. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, music, dancing and long drives through the Black Hills.
Herbert is survived by his three sons, Richard (Nancy) Waddington of Luverne, MN; Rex (Kathy) Waddington of Franktown, CO; Rodney Waddington (Addie) of Custer, SD; two daughters, RaBetta "Betty" (Don) Tye of Chamberlain, SD; Rickie Bonnette of Custer, SD; two sisters, Audrey (Alan) Wilomowskie of Louisiana; Helen Hutt of Arkansas; 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Violet, his parents, one grandson and one great grandson.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Monday, January 29, 2007 at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 30, 2007 at McColley's Chapel with Pastor Bill Savery officiating.
Interment will follow the funeral services at the Custer Cemetery.
