Obituary

Ianita "Sis" Josephine Curley (Peterson) passed away on April 30, 2019 in Hot Springs, SD where she lived with her husband Bill since 2000.

Ianita was born at home in Eagle Butte, SD on July 30, 1940 to Carl and Lizzie (Acker) Peterson. She was the second to the youngest girl of 9 children.

Sis grew up on a farm in Eagle Butte and graduated from Eagle Butte High School in 1958. She went to nursing school at Anchor Hospital School of Nursing in St. Paul, MN and obtained her Diploma in Nursing in 1961.

After graduation, she and a friend accepted positions as registered nurses in Hawaii, where she met Bill on the first day she arrived, September 15,1962. They were married on October 30, 1962. They almost did not get married due to the Cuban Missile Crisis.  Traveling across the US with Bill, she served as a Navy wife, mother, and a nurse in Hawaii, California, Washington, South Carolina, and South Dakota. She was a proud mother of 3, grandmother of 9, and great-grandmother of 12. She was a wonderful wife, an amazing mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was full of life and always had a smile on her face. She was an excellent nurse who was respected by both her coworkers and doctors she worked with. Her last job as a nurse was at Black Hills Special Services where she put her whole heart into her work.

Ianita is survived by her husband of 56 years, Bill Curley; daughter Beth (Paul) Erk of Newell, SD; sons Kevin (Rosemarie) Curley of Midlothian, VA and James (Michelle) Curley of Goose Creek, SC; grandchildren Paul (Allea) Provorse, Ryan (Jenna) Curley, Courtney Provorse, Casey (Danielle) Curley, Megan Provorse, Brian Curley, Chad (Amber) Erk, John (Anna) Erk, Megan Erk; great-grandchildren Raelee, Alice, Maggie,  Sawyer, Maddie, Ferris, Townes, Lexi, Rachel, Sarah, Will, and Matthew; sisters Tiny (Keith) Farlee of Lantry, SD, Pat Fish of Sedro Woolley, WA, and Marilyn (Roland) Roth of Flasher, ND; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Lizzie Peterson; brothers Dennis, Delbert, Harley, and Raymond Peterson/sen; and sister Betty DeRouchey Horn.

Christian Vigil Services will be at 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 3, 2019 at St. Anthony Padua Catholic Church in Hot Springs, SD. Light refreshments will be served in the church lobby after the service.

Christian Funeral Mass will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 4, 2019 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church with Fr. Gerlach as celebrant. Please join the family in the Church Hall for a reception following mass.

Christian burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2019, at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
