Irene C. Kirk, age 96, of Custer, SD passed away May 13, 2008 at Custer Regional Senior Care in Custer.
Irene was born in Hill City, SD, the daughter of Wilson (Teak) and Elizabeth Pettit on November 9, 1911. Irene grew up in the Black Hills and graduated from high school in Rapid City, SD. She attended the University of Colorado in Boulder before transferring to Spearfish Normal School where she earned a teaching certificate. She taught at Dry Creek School east of Game Lodge.
On May 25, 1935 she married Samuel Kirk and moved to a one room log house north of Pringle. Sam worked at the Lime Kiln and built his new bride a house at the Kiln where they would live for the next 65 years. Irene devoted her life to raising three sons. Jack, Doug and Jimmy and working along with Sam running Black Hills Lime Company and raising registered Herefords. She was active in the Pringle Methodist Church and 4-H leader for many years. She enjoyed collecting stamps, gardening and cooking. Her German Chocolate Cake was a favorite of everyone.
Irene was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Samuel A. Kirk and her son, James S. Kirk.
She is survived by her sons, John W. 'Jack' Kirk and wife Isa of Pringle, SD; Douglas J Kirk and wife Annette of Tracy, CA. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Mary Kirk of Fremont, CA; John Kirk of Pine Ridge, SD; Shawn Riggs of Loveland, CO; Bryan Kirk of Martin, SD; Erin Selby of Rapid City; Kevin Kirk of San Jose, CA; Dawn Bentz of Washington DC; Dustin Kirk of San Diego, CA; Kimberly Jacobs of Tracy, CA; William Kirk of Tracy, CA and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at United Methodist Church in Pringle, SD with Pastors Floyd and Norma Mills officiating. Interment will follow at the Pringle Cemetery in Pringle, SD.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that contributions be made in Irene's name to the United Methodist Church in Pringle, SD.
