Obituary

Jack Dean Burgess, age 62, of Safford, AZ died November 19, 2006 in Safford, AZ.

Jack Dean Burgess was born July 22, 1944 in Chadron, NE to George and Edna (Hamilton) Burgess. His brother, Wayne, and sister-in-law, Agnes Burgess raised him from the age of three on. He grew up in the Pleasant Hill Community east of Oelrichs and attended his grade school years there. He and his nephew, DuWayne, rode their horses from home every day to school and back.

Jack graduated from Oelrichs High School where he excelled in the sport of football. He was given a full ride scholarship to Huron College. While in College he was invited to attend the 49ers Spring Football Camp. Also in college he was an All-American wrestler. He didn't start wrestling until he attended college.

But his desire was to be able to team rope year round. So he moved to Willcox, AZ. Because of his devotion to roping he earned an excellent reputation for riding good horses. Jack served as a director of the Cochise-Graham Cattle Growers Association for several years while he managed ranches in Aravaipa Canyon for the Von Trapp Family.

Later he worked for the Arizona Department of Corrections, earning the rank of sergeant. He retired in October 2005 from his position. During these years he and his wife, Terry, expanded their cattle herd on the Single Tree Cattle Co. Outfit. Jack and Terry acquired many friends through their years of roping.

Jack is survived by his wife of 18 years, Terry; sons, George and JD of Goodyear; stepson, Austin Ty McEuen; grandchild, Marina Lily; brother, Wayne (Agnes) Burgess of Oelrichs, SD; niece, Teresa (Brett) Blessing of Hot Springs, SD; nephew, David Burgess of MN; great nieces, Merissa Rickel and Amanda Burgess of Hot Springs, SD; great nephew, Mike Close of Rapid City, SD and many cousins and friends.

Preceding Jack in death was his mother, father, one brother, Kenneth Burgess; nephew, DuWayne Burgess and two cousins, Neal Burgess and Dolly Bowker.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, November 24, at the New Life City Church in Safford, AZ, with interment at the Graham Cemetery in Safford.
