James Edward Doerner, age 90, passed away October 15, 2011, at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home in Hot Springs, SD.
James was born March 6, 1921 in Graceville, MN, to Frank Joseph and Gertrude Elizabeth (Trainor) Doerner.
In infancy Jim moved with the Frank Doerner family to St. Cloud, MN. There he attended school and graduated from Cathedral High School. He attended Marquette University for one year before being drafted into the US Army Infantry. His service took him to Europe thirty days after D-Day. He was a radio operator during his years of service. He served seven years total. After the service, Jim attended college to pursue his love of mathematics. He taught Math courses at several corporations including Bendix, Control Data and Quantel. He wrote a handbook for users of Hewlett Packard Calculator 48.
Jim never married but was a lively presence at family gatherings.
Survivors include brothers, Philip (Joan) Doerner of Lakewood, CO; Rev. Linus Doerner O.C.S.O. of Rancagua, Chile; sister, Dorothy Doerner of Hot Springs as well as twelve nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, John; Loren; Paul; and sister, Barbara in infancy.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 19, 2011, at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans home auditorium in Hot Springs, SD, with Fr. Thomas Tierney officiating.
Interment will follow at the Cold Springs School House Cemetery in Pringle, SD.
