James Vincent 'Jim' Aman, age 77, of Custer, SD, passed away November 5, 2011, at his home.
Jim was born in Pringle, SD on May 12, 1934, to Lant and Mae (Gamber) Aman. He was the second of six children born to that union. Jim attended school in Pringle through the 8th grade. After Lant passed away, Jim left school to help support the family. Jim initially worked for Ventling Sawmill, and then went to work for the South Dakota State Highway Department in1952. He furthered his education through classes at the South Dakota School of Mines, and taught classes in Pierre during his tenure with the highway department. Jim retired from his career with the state in 1992.
In 1954, Jim married Freda Waffensmith in Chadron. Together they had ten children. Jim and Freda were married 56 years before she passed away in 2010.
Jim, also known as "Pops", was an extremely caring man, with a love of the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was known for his work ethic, for being fair, and his love and commitment to his family. As an adult, Jim joined St. John's Catholic Church, and enjoyed his involvement in RCIA.
Jim is survived by nine children: Cindy (John) Daly of Box Elder, SD; Mike (Lori) Aman of Blair, NE; Carol (Stan) Rish of Nampa, ID; John (Peggy) Aman of Parker, CO; Lloyd Aman and Kitty Wilkerson, Custer; Sandra (Stan) Stenson of Ingleside, TX; James R. Aman of Tillamook, OR; Richard Aman of Lakewood, CA; Stephen (Libby) Aman, Menahga, MN; ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. He also is survived by one sister, Margaret Jordt of Tooele, UT, and three brothers: Albert (Laverne) Aman of Tooele, UT, LeRoy Aman (Phoenix, AZ) and Chet (Barbara) Aman of Nemo, SD.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Lant and Mae, his step-father, Warren Carpenter, his wife, Freda, and his daughter, Patty, and sister, Mary Ann Redenbaugh.
Wake services will be held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Custer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 10, 2011, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Custer with Fr. Peter Kovarik officiating. Interment will follow at the Custer Cemetery.
A memorial will be determined at a future date by the family.
