James F. 'Jim' Rhoades, age 87, of Custer, SD, passed away July 1, 2014, surrounded by his wife, daughter and grandsons.
Jim was born November 20, 1926, at Keystone, SD, to Irene Cahoe. He was raised by his grandparents, Frank and Martha Rhoades at Foster Gulch by Keystone. Jim served in the United States Army from January 20, 1945, until his honorable discharge on November 27, 1946. He worked for the 7-11 Ranch near Buffalo Gap, SD. It was here that he met the love of his life, Wilma Cutler and married her on February 26, 1963, in Buffalo Gap. They moved to Custer in 1973 and lived here until the time of his death. Jim had several jobs throughout his life. Most recently he worked at Custer Lumber and Custer State Park, which was his favorite.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at the Custer Living Outreach Church in Custer with Pastor Joel Ziolkowski officiating.
Jim is survived by his wife of 51 years, Wilma of Custer; daughter, Lavonna Rowlette of Weatherford, TX; grandkids, Chris, Jesse and Nick of Rapid City, SD; son-in-law, Eddie Rowlette of Rapid City; sister, Clara Zechin of Rapid City; sister-in-law, Jean Cutler of Maize, KS; brothers-in-law, LeRoy Cutler of Custer; Forrest Cutler of Rapid City, SD; Marion Cutler of Lead, SD; nieces, Lisa Jackson of Rapid City; Charmaine Johnson; of Renton, WA; nephews, Theron Cutler of Wichita, KS; Lance Cutler of Yukon, OK; Lyle Cutler of Rapid City; great grandchildren, Iridessa; Devan; Nikkole; as well as many friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Irene; brothers -in-law, Neil Cutler; Leland Cutler; Ted Zechin; and his beloved grandson, Tyler.
A memorial has been established in Jim's name for the continued care of his wife, Wilma.
