James P. Palmer, formerly of Custer, was born December 22, 1939, to Wesley and Mae (Steen) Palmer in Miller, SD. The Family moved to Custer when Jim was a young boy. He graduated from Custer High School in 1958 and married Bette (Steen) June 21, 1960, in Custer, SD. They had two children, Wesley and Vicki.

He began working for Black Hills National Forest Service in Custer in 1958 and worked there until his retirement in 1991. Jim was an active member of the Custer County Fire Department and Custer County Ambulance. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and spending time with his family

On Tuesday, July 3, 2007 Jim died at the Huron Nursing Home. He was 67 years old.
He was preceded in death by his wife Bette in 2000; son Wesley in 1965; parents, Wesley and Mae; sisters Nellie, Betty and Tootsie
.
Survivors include his daughter, Vicki of Huron, SD; two brothers, Leslie (Donna) of Douglas, WY, Chuck (Bernie) of Laramie, WY; one sister, Jeanenne of OR. and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., July 6, 2007 at Custer Lutheran Fellowship Interment will be at Custer County Cemetery with McColley's Chapel of Custer in charge arrangements. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, July 5, 2007 at the McColley's Chapel.

Pallbearers are Troy Palmer, Sue Palmer, Derrick Freese, Danny Palmer, Earl Sallee and Corey Lundy.
