James 'Jim Pete' Peterson , 77, of Hot Springs, SD, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2014, at the VA Medical Center in Hot Springs.
Jim Pete came into this world on September 12, 1936, in the original farm house on the old Alfred Peterson Ranch in Todd County SD. He was the only child of Almer J. & Viva M. (Rogers) Peterson. He spent most of life around Kilgore, NE.
Jim Pete served his county in the United States Army Air Force from December 1958 to January 1965. His service continued on the home front when he became a Veterans Service Officer in Cherry County Nebraska, of which he was the most proud in all his occupations in life. He belonged to and was a life member in most Veterans Service Clubs; Legion of Cody, NE; and VFW Post in Valentine, NE. He helped start the Vietnam Veterans of America in Nebraska, Disabled American Veterans and National Association of County Veterans Service Officers. He was a Charter member of South Dakota Cowboy and Western Hall of Fame and I am sure I forgot some of them.
Jim Pete was a prolific writer and storyteller, a passion his family and friends will treasure. One of the many joys we will all remembers was his ability to breathe life into the stories he told. He was very dedicated to his family lineage and spent many hours in research and exploration of the family history. His ready smile as well as his silly humor is a memory for us all to carry in our hearts. The passion and dedication he felt for the veterans he was able to serve was truly honorable, and we as his family are very proud of that service.
He is survived by the love of his life, Mary Helen Pederson of Hot Springs; son, Ardel J. Peterson and wife, Shannon, and children, Colby and Emilie of Eugene, OR, daughter, Dede M. Peterson of Newcastle, WY, and her children, Colt Peterson and wife, Andrea of Canon City, CO; Bryce Peterson-Wood and wife, Emily of Aurora, CO; Shyane Peterson-Wood of Spearfish, SD; Tyler Peterson-Wood of Osage, WY; brother, Leslie Granthan of Douglas WY; sister, Elva Glassmeyer of Denver CO; and five great-grandchildren.
Committal services were held at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD, at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 30, 2014, with the South Dakota National Guard and Sturgis Veterans Honor Guards providing Military Honors.
Memorial services were held at the Vets Club in Valentine, NE, on February 1, 2014.
