Obituary

James "Jim" Gregory Red Cloud passed away on Thursday, June 29, 2017, at his home in Hot Springs, SD.

Jim was an artist and an author with works that focused on cultural disparity and inequality. His passion inspired him to create the Sacred Buffalo; a buffalo skeleton with scrimshaw designs depicting the history and traditions of the Lakota People. He was also inspirited to tell the story of Christ through scrimshaw carvings on the bones of a human skeleton. Jim was a profoundly compassionate man who cared deeply about the concerns and issues on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and became a Tribal attorney in an effort to help improve conditions there. He was an entrepreneur and founder of the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge; a long-distance motorcycle ride established to bring awareness to the plight of Indian people around the Nation. Jim also loved adventuring and was an avid hunter, fisherman, surfer, motorcyclist, leader, and friend to many. He touched countless lives and will be remembered as a man of conviction and passion.

Jim will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 34 years, Elizabeth Moyer-Durham; daughter, Crystal (Jerry) Carter and granddaughter, Peyton Everitt; sister, Jana Durham; and brothers, John and Joseph Durham.

Jim was preceded in death by his son, Nicholas Durham, father Verdell Red Cloud and mother Juanita Durham.

Committal services for Jim will be held, 2:00 p.m., Friday, July 21, 2017, at The Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD., with a Celebration of Life to follow, 5:00 p.m., Friday, July 21, 2017, at the United Churches (342 North Garden Street) in Hot Springs.
