Janice Marie Kooyman, age 65, of Custer, SD, passed away July 19, 2013, at Custer Regional Hospital in Custer.
Janice Marie (Lancaster) Kooyman was born November 26, 1947, in Hot Springs, SD, to Harvey Edward Lancaster and Mae Flower (Denton) Lancaster. Janice grew up in a house in Custer State Park with her 2 older brothers, Ron and Gary. She went to school in a 1 room school house in Custer State Park until high school where she attended and graduated from Custer High School in 1966. While living in the park as a teenager, she spent her summers working at the Custer Game Lodge where she helped her mother in the kitchen, cleaned rooms and also worked at Legion Lake Cabins.
In June 1966, she married Ralph Kelley of Custer. They had 3 daughters, Tina Mae, Tammy Marie and Tanya Machelle. She married Harry Kooyman of Custer on April 15, 1994. She worked various jobs in Custer throughout the years; retiring form Telco FCU.
During her years, Janice was a member of the Home Extension Project Pals, was in charge of organizing the sunflower for Gold Discovery Days pageant of Paha SaPa and later served on the Gold Discovery Days committee. Her hobbies included bowling, cooking, gardening, tole painting, ceramics, macramé and bird watching. In the months before her passing, she could be seen sitting on her deck or looking out her dining room window watching her doves and robins eating and bathing in the bird bath.
Janice was a wonderful caring person. She loved her family very much and she enjoyed spending time with them. Everyone that knew her knew she had to have her "face on" before leaving the house.
Janice lost her battle with leukemia on July 19, at Custer Regional Hospital, where she was surrounded by her loving family.
Preceding her in death was her mother, Mae Lancaster, a nephew and many aunts and uncles. She leaves behind her father, Harvey Lancaster of Custer; husband, Harry Kooyman of Custer; 3 daughters, Tina Grable of Custer; Tammy (Tim) Wicks of Custer; Tanya (Mark) Barnes of Rapid City; step-sons, Greg Kooyman of San Diego, CA; Robert Kooyman of Fayettville, AR; Steve (Joann) Kooyman of Chandler, AZ; Clark Kooyman of Sioux Falls, SD; brothers, Ron (Carol) Lancaster of Morristown, AZ; Gary (Josie) Lancaster of Lewistown, MT; sister-in-law, Shirley Lambert of Sgt. Bluff IA; seven granddaughters and ten step-grandchildren; and one great step-grandson, 2 aunts and many cousins ,nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at Custer Lutheran Fellowship with Pastor Kent Narum officiating. Interment will be in the Custer Cemetery following the memorial service.
A memorial has been established to help with Janice's medical expenses at Black Hills Federal Credit Union.
