Janice L. Marteny

Janice Marteny, 88, of Custer, SD, passed away at Rapid City Monument Health Hospital on March 29, 2026.

Janice Lee Stratton Marteny was a cherished soul who touched the lives of many during her 88 years. A devoted mother to her seven children, she leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness and unwavering faith, following her beloved husband to heaven. Her Methodist faith in Pringle, SD, and her love of square dancing were hallmarks of her spirited nature and she enjoyed her winter trips to Arizona. She will be remembered for her warm smile, bright blue eyes, generosity and the way she brought people together. Her stories and her dedication to family gatherings created binds that will endure. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those she inspired and supported throughout her life.

Janice was born February 7, 1938, in Custer to Louis and Thelma Stratton. She married Byron Marteny June 1, 1962, and they raised 7 children.

Janice is survived by all of her kids; Tom Breen, Susan Sparvell; Bob Marteny of Custer; Timmy Joe Marteny; Keith Marteny; Daniel Ray Marteny of Washington; Ann Kasiska of Kansas; 13 grandkids and many great grandkids.

She is predeceased by her parents; husband; brother, Vern and a granddaughter.

Graveside services will be held in July.
