Jesse was born in Poweshiek County, Iowa, on April 2nd, 1924 to Wallace and Myrtle Cloyd. He graduated from the Newburg (Iowa) High School in 1941 and was drafted into World War II in 1942. In the Army, he worked as a typist and an x-ray technician at O’Reilly Army Hospital in Springfield, Missouri, where he met his future wife, M. Louise Dean. The couple was married Feb. 24, 1945 and had 66 years together before Louise died in 2011.
After the Army, Jesse attended and graduated from Palmer Chiropractic College in Davenport, Iowa, and then did graduate studies at Logan Chiropractic College in St. Louis. He practiced chiropractic in Cedar Rapids (Iowa), Wellington (New Zealand), and then 32 years in Springfield (Missouri) before retiring in 1990.
In retirement, the couple traveled around the world, then lived in Phoenix, Arizona (1991-2002) and Hot Springs, SD (2002-2011). In 2011, Jess returned to (Republic) Missouri, where he made his home until December 2024 when he moved to his daughter’s place near Edgemont, SD.
Surviving are two sons and two daughters: Larry (Barb) Cloyd, Hickman, NE; Linda (Walter) Weeda, Sandy UT; David Cloyd, Shell Knob, MO; and Anne Cassens, Edgemont, SD. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren, and a host of special friends.
Jess loved people and “took in” many young people and adults who needed a little help, never keeping an account of what he gave for the many other people he helped.
Jess was a part of a world-wide fellowship of people and had friends around the world who love the gospel of Jesus. Above all else Jess valued his faith. At an early age his dear mother instilled in him a respect for the Lord. He chose this fellowship at age 15 and remained true to that choice for the next 87 years. When his physical strength lessened, his love and commitment to God remained strong. In his last days he found much comfort in listening to the scripture read to him and listening to hymns.
“Even though Daddy's natural hearing was almost gone, he could still hear that still small voice of God; even though his sight was almost gone, he could see the way of God so plain and never doubted; and even though his mind wasn't as clear, he still understood the will of God for his life....... to the very end of his journey.”
