John R. Baumann, 85, died at his beloved Black Hills home, north of Custer, SD, on March 16, 2018.
John was born July 10th, 1932, at White River, SD, to George & Opal (Emerick) Baumann. He grew up on the family ranch at White River. John served in the Air Force from 1952 until 1956. Soon after, he attended Spartan School of Aeronautics, at Tulsa, OK, and graduated with an A&E (Airframes & Engines) license as well as a flight engineer rating. He, proudly, received his pilot's license during this era. He then worked at Snedigar Flying Service till 1966 as a mechanic & state aircraft inspector. At this time John became a USFS mechanic / equipment inspector at the Hill City shop and "retired" in 1993. He & wife, Kay, then pursued his next desire by custom baling hay for 15 years as well as maintaining the two ranches & part of the family Vacation Home Rental business. During the 15 years that we baled hay, John designed and forged (custom made) a total of 100 knives during the winters. Also, for 10 of those years he was chairman of the annual Southern Hills Chapter NWTF wildlife banquet and auction. John planned to "really retire" at age 90. John also served on boards & was moderator at Custer Community Church for many years.
John's favorite trip was to Alaska with Kay & two offspring & spouses, where John watched son, Patrick, run the world class "Mt. Marathon" race. He fished salmon and halibut and his expertise earned him the nickname "Halibut John".
John is survived by his wife of 61 years, BernaDene Kay; three children, Pastor Patrick (Ginger), Mark (Agnes), and Tricia (Mark) Morehead; sister, Anna Gricius; 10 grand- children; numerous great grandchildren as well as countless dear friends here who will miss him and his sweet smile.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, and 4 siblings.
