John L. Evans, 86, of Custer, SD, passed away December 3, 2019, at his residence in Custer, SD.

John was born June 15, 1933, in Miller, SD, to Albert and Precious (Almond) Evans.

John proudly served in the U.S. Army until his honorable discharge in 1958.  John was the Chief of Custer Police Department and then worked with the Custer County Sherriff department.  He retired after 33 years with the City of Custer.

John is survived by his son, John W. (Peggy) Evans of Custer; his sister, Gladys Jentsen of Miller, SD; and grandchildren, Amanda Evans of Sioux Falls; Christina Edwards of Custer; Rochelle Love of Seattle, WA; and 6 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, December 8, 2019, at Chamberlain McColley's Funeral Home in Custer.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 9, 2019, at Custer Community Church with Reverend Dustin Bartlett officiating.  Committal services will follow at the Custer Cemetery with military honors.
