Obituary

John E. Hannan entered rest on Friday, December 1, 2006 in Stockton, California.

John was born on February 7, 1933 in the Black Hills of South Dakota, Fall River County to Frank and Bessie Hannan, the 7th of 8 children. He attended Hot Springs, South Dakota schools, graduating from high school in 1951 and Dakota Wesleyan University in 1955.

John moved to Stockton, California in the fall of 1966 and took employment as a classroom teacher at Stockton Junior High School. He became active in the rental housing industry which allowed him to retire from teaching in 1977. Prior teaching positions were in South Dakota, Nevada, Montana and Colorado. During the summers, John worked as a seasonal ranger for the National Park Service in South Dakota at both Jewel Cave National Monument and Wind Cave National Park. As a ranger he helped map and explore Jewel Cave. While at Wind Cave National Park, he met his wife, Alice.

John was an honorary life member of San Joaquin Dixieland Jazz Society and San Joaquin County Rental Property Association. Music was an important aspect of his life. He started playing the tuba in elementary school and most recently was a member of the Lodi Community Band. He bowled with the Stockton Teachers League until 1982. He was currently bowling in the Manteca Senior League. Gardening and traveling were also his pastimes.

John is survived by his wife, Alice Hannan and their two daughters, Yvonne Melkonian (Paul) of Sacramento and Paula Hannan of Beaverton, Oregon, two granddaughters, Alicia Melkonian and Rebecca Melkonian, two sisters, Delma Mehlhaff (Walter) and Mary Anderson, one brother, Vernon Max Hannan (Jean) and numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held from 7:30pm to 8:30pm, Thursday, December 7, 2006 at McColley's Chapels of the Hills in Hot Springs, SD.

Committal services will be held 1:00 pm, Friday, December 8, 2006 at the Fairview Cemetery in Oral, SD, with services to follow at 2:00 pm, at the Oral United Methodist Church with Pastor Morris Nelson officiating.

Friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life on Saturday, December 16, 2006, 2 to 4 PM, at the Elks Lodge, 8900 Thornton Road, Stockton, CA.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Lodi Community Band, P O Box 2565, Lodi CA 95241, or the Marge Nielsen Memorial Fund, San Joaquin Dixieland Jazz Society, PO Box 4746, Stockton, CA 95204.
