John Jake Herman was born to Otto and Margaret Herman on January 9, 1923, at Wood, SD. John spent his younger years working on ranches in Mellette County. He proudly served in the United States Army in Okinawa and the Philippines, until his honorable discharge on November 28, 1946. John returned home and continued working on ranches.
On December 13, 1952, John married Lola Bryan and to this union one son, Robert was born. In the spring of 1966, John went to work on road construction for the next twenty-five years. He was a proficient dozer operator working many years for Delzer Construction of Rapid City, SD.
In the spring of 1981, John and Lola moved to a ranch about six miles south of Pringle where they spent their retirement years. They enjoyed the quiet ranch life caring for their dog, chickens, cows and horses. John lost his wife, Lola, on December 13, 1999, which was their 47th Wedding Anniversary.
John was especially proud of his three grandsons, Nick, Chad and Nathan and their wives and children. He enjoyed talking on the phone and relating all the news.
After a brief stay at Custer Regional Senior Care in Custer, SD John passed away on July 29, 2011 at the age of 88.
John is survived by his son, Robert (Nancy) Herman of Custer; two brothers, Roland Herman of Hot Springs, SD; Bob (Joyce) Herman of Winner, SD; three sisters, Gerta Stillwell of Omaha, NE; Lillian Betcher of Cambridge, MN; Mary Herman of Arizona; three grandchildren, Nick (Mellisa), Chad (Amber) and Nathan and four great grandchildren (Nickolas, Tanner, Holley and Cody).
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 3, 2011, at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer with Pastor Bill Savery officiating. Pallbearers are John's grandsons: Nick, Chad and Nathan and Chris Morgan, Bob Morgan and Dan Wood.
Interment will follow at the Pringle Cemetery, where John will be laid to rest with full military honors.
