Obituary

John Andrew Holm, 68, Custer SD died October 17, 2011 at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper Wyoming of pulmonary fibrosis.

John was born July 12, 1943 in Parkers Prairie, Minnesota to Reuben and Clara Holm. He was the youngest of 5 children living on the family diary farm. His siblings included, Louise (Kenley) Boyum, Plymouth MN; Doris (Don) Holm, Renville MN: Gladys (Garnet) Suppes, Eden Prairie MN; Peter (Marlene) Holm, St Cloud MN. John graduated from Parkers Prairie High School in 1961. Following high school he attended Alexandria VoTech to become a farm mechanic and upon completion worked for a John Deere Dealer.

John was drafted into the United States Army in 1964. He served at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico as a chaplain's assistant. It was there he met his first wife, Pat. He was discharged in 1966, E-4 Viet Nam Vet.

John and Pat were the parents of two children, Sandra and Bob. They attempted farming, at his family farm, but after six dry years, chose to sell. John writes that "life became very flexible after that point. They lived in Starbuck, Braham, Wilmar, and Valley Spring, South Dakota. Pat and John were divorced in 1991. That year John moved to Canistota, South Dakota and began furniture manufacturing.

John married Addie Lyman in 1993 and was very happily married until the day of his death. The couple moved to Grand Lake, Colorado and started High Pine Log Furniture. They relocated to Custer, SD in 2001. They closed the furniture manufacturing effort in 2010. John started John's Small Engine Service at that time.

John's daughter Sandra has three children, Chelsey Zaft, who shares her grandfather's birthday, turning 21 at his 65th; Scott Houtkooper, who is employed at Wilson Trailer Sales in Sioux Falls, and Samantha Haan, a freshman at Lennox, SD.

John's son Bob has two children, Alyssa an active 10 year old and great student; and Anna age seven who loves to swim, gymnastics, and going to the water park.

John believed that there are many things that change the course of one's life. However his constant core was his faith in God, family and country. He was always active in church and singing as an expression of his faith and joy. He loved to spend quiet time fishing in both summer and winter.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, November 4, 2011, at the Custer Lutheran Fellowship near Custer with Pastor Tom Opoien and Pastor Kent Narum officiating.
