John Charles Mastin, 61 years young

Born to life 5/21/52 ~ Entered everlasting life 1/20/14

For the greatest thing that remains in the hearts of those he leaves behind...is his character.

On Monday afternoon of January 20th, 2014, John Charles Mastin, in his recliner at his home in Custer, South Dakota, quietly closed the final chapter of his amazing life. A life filled with trials and triumphs, great travels, and much love from family and immeasurable friends. John is now rejoined with his father, Obie Mastin and his mother, Doris Mastin, his older brother Geno Mastin, all whom he loved and missed.

Although born in Arcata, CA, John grew up in Int'l Falls, MN, alongside his brothers. Whom he now leaves behind his last brother, Dave Mastin in Big Falls, MN. By the grace of God, John rose up from challenges that faced him, found his calling in law enforcement, started his career as a police officer for the city of Int'l Falls before transitioning to county deputy and moving his family to Big Falls, MN. There John lovingly served the people of Koochiching County for 34 years as Deputy, Under-sheriff & Sheriff with great pride and honor, changing the lives of many in all the local communities.

During this time he raised a family with his first wife, Mary Mastin, whom also entered into rest recently. His first son, Rich (Carrie) Mastin, now proudly follows in his footsteps and serves the city of Int'l Falls as an officer. His daughter, Jennifer (Randy Tessen), resides in Appleton, WI with a wonderful family of her own. His son, John (Lacie) Mastin resides in Cheyenne, WY where he has fostered a successful business career.

At 39, John met and married his beautiful wife Carolyn Mastin, whom he now leaves behind. Carolyn proved to be John's perfect match and true companion. It was with Carolyn that John truly came to life as a cowboy riding, driving & training horses; creating a business together in Pinewood Stables, traveling the country on their beloved Harley Davidson's, and bringing to all of us John's youngest son, Garrett Mastin, who resides in Cheyenne, WY, serves in the Army National Guard while working on his law enforcement degree.

With John's recent retirement two years ago, it was their dream that they purchase their small retirement ranch in Custer, SD to enjoy the Black Hills. John and Carolyn loved the west; the history, riding motorcycles, horses, ATVs, & even their antique tractors in the Hills. The beauty of the area even brought John's mother-in-law, Dorothy (Ray Anderson), whom he loves dearly out west after Vergal's passing, and now resides in Rapid City.

John's greatest possession is that of his family. In his wisdom, with strong hand, yet never ending love, he instilled in us that family is the most important thing. We all love you in return...more than words could ever express. John leaves behind his grandchildren whom he adored, Chad (Karley) Mastin, Josh Mastin, and Kirsten & Travis Tessen. He and 'grandma' Carolyn showered them with love, gifts, and fun activities each time they were able to spend time together.

He created great bonds with close friends & neighbors - too many to mention. He did cherish those friendships in return. In addition, through his career, he touched the lives of so many throughout the local communities by serving on the school board, the Lion's club, teaching D.A.R.E., and as the county juvenile officer and investigator. He had great faith in his community and the kids and families in it.

Life is a journey - enjoy the ride & that he did! Now a new Journey in Heaven.

John was also survived by as his dog, Custer; cat, Ditty; three horses, Dark Justice, Kasanova and Noble.

Memorial services will be held at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, January 23, 2014, at the Custer Lutheran Fellowship with Pastor Opoien officiating.
