John Maurice Wells, age 72, passed away May 18, 2012, at his home near Hot Springs, SD.
John was born October 14, 1939, in Dayton OH, to Maurice Joseph and Leona Grace (Zinck) Wells. He received his BS degree from the University of Dayton, Dayton, OH in 1961, his MS, PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1969 and his MD in 1984 from the University of California San Francisco Medical Center. He worked in private practice in Yankton, SD from 1984 until 2004, and became Chief Radiologist at the VA Hospital in Hot Springs, SD, in 2005. He was a member of the American Medical Association; the American College of Radiology; American Mathematical Association; American Chemical Society; Sierra Club, Humane Society; Defenders of the Wilderness and the ASPCA.
John married Irene Hoh Swee Har in 1997. He was previously married to Marcella Ann Sakalas of Yankton, SD. He had an unending thirst for knowledge and loved all the sciences; he strived to understand in graphic detail how all things worked. John's hobbies included scuba diving, mycology; mushroom hunting, woodworking, and support for rescued pets. He had a recent intense interest in the Hadron Collider project in Europe.
Survivors include his wife, Irene; son, Matthew Wells of Houston, TX; step-son, Aeius Cercle of Bellevue, WA; brother, Frederick J. (Martha) Wells of Houston, TX; step-brother, James (Nell) Orndorf of Ohio and step-sister, Elizabeth (Lee) Buchanan of Franklin, OH.
Wake services will be held 6:00 p.m., Friday, May 25, 2012, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Hot Springs.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 26, 2012, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Hot Springs with Fr. Peter Kovarik officiating.
