Joseph William Bogner was born at the Sisters Hospital in Hot Springs, SD, on April 16, 1931. He was the youngest of ten children born to August and Elizabeth Hesse Bogner. They lived 10 miles southwest of Oelrichs.
Joe attended Chadron High School and graduated in 1949. He served in the Army from January 1952 until January 1954. He was stationed in Germany during the Korean War and toured many countries by motorcycle.
He met Shirley Joan Thompson in Hot Springs in 1954, and they were married on June 16, 1955. Children from that union are Philip, Eileen, Laura, and Glen. They lived on a ranch fourteen miles southeast of Oelrichs.
The family attended St. Martins Catholic Church in Oelrichs and participated in many church, school and community activities. Joe was a trustee at church and the township board, on the school board for eight years, drove the school activities bus for many years and was on many Ag committees. He belonged to the Elks Lodge in Chadron and American Legion in Oelrichs.
In 1996, Joe and Shirley sold the ranch and moved to Hot Springs where Joe stayed busy volunteering at the church and VA. He was frequently helping friends and neighbors. He was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus member and attended St. Anthony's Catholic Church.
Joe died unexpectedly of complications from heart surgery on December 20, 2010.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley of Hot Springs; his children, Philip (Genell) Bogner of Fargo, ND; Eileen (Wayne) Vickers of Newcastle, WY; Laura Porter of McKinney, TX; and Glen (Rebecca) Bogner of Dayton, OH; sister, Isabel Ash of Newark, CA; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Wake services will be at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 22, 2010, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Hot Springs.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, December 23, 2010, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church with Father Peter Kovarik officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Oelrichs, SD.
A memorial in Joe's name has been established at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hot Springs, contributions can be mailed to Shirley Bogner, 207 N. 3rd St., Hot Springs, SD 57747.
