Joyce Lucille Phillips, age 85, of Hot Springs, SD, passed away on January 17, 2016, at the Pine Hills Retirement Community in Hot Springs.


Joyce was born on April 22, 1930, in Custer, SD, to her beloved parents Guy Paul and Lillian Madeline (Lutlift) Hendrickson. She married Gene Phillips on June 30, 1950. They operated a dairy farm in Custer until 1972, at which they moved to a ranch near Minnekahta Valley. Joyce helped on the ranch and also worked several jobs in the Custer and Hot Springs communities. She enjoyed volunteering for 4-H and Youth Rodeos.


She is survived by her son, Scott (Kristi) Phillips of Hot Springs, SD; brother, Roy (Mary) Hendrickson of Custer, SD; sisters, Evelyn (Art) Fischer of Phoenix, AZ; Eloise Pepin of Custer, SD; Leola (Johnny) Thompson of Phoenix, AZ; Derele Wynia of Hot Springs, SD; numerous nieces and nephews.


She is preceded in death by her husband, Gene; parents; four brothers and two sisters.


Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 30, 2016, at Chamberlain McColley's Funeral Home in Hot Springs. Committal services will be held 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 1, 2016, at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.


In lieu of flowers the family has established a memorial in Joyce's name to benefit the American Cancer Society.
