Kenneth Richard Colyer, 78, died December 20, 2007 at Custer Regional Senior Care.
He was born December 3, 1929 in Jonesboro, IN to Lawrence and Pheba Colyer. He was the oldest son of six children.
Ken graduated from Gas City High School in Gas City, IN and went on to trade school at Coyne Electric in Chicago where he graduated as an electrician. He enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War and spent his time in Texas, Colorado and Rapid City Army Air Base in SD.
While stationed in Rapid City, he met and married Martha (Bunny) Masters in Custer, SD in 1951. When Ken was discharged in 1952, they moved to Gas City IN. Ken went to work at the Owens Illinois Glass Factory in September 1952 and spent 29 years there as an electrician, finally moving up to supervisor in the late 1970's.
Their son John was born in 1953 in Gas City, IN. In 1981 Ken took a transfer to the New Orleans, LA Owens Illinois factory and worked there for five years, until retiring. They moved to Metairie, LA in 1981, a suburb of New Orleans and lived there until 1988. At that time they decided to move back to Custer to be closer to Bunny's parents.
In 2001 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary
Ken was an active member of the Berean Bible Church in Custer. He was a Gideon and especially liked giving out testaments to 5th graders.
Ken worked several years for Bob and Ron Bradeen in the auction ring.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and especially enjoyed his great grandson Chris. He will be sadly missed by all.
He is survived by his wife, Bunny; son, John (Kathy) Colyer all of Custer; one granddaughter, Rose (Bob) Tabor and one grandson John II (Allyson) Colyer all of Colorado Springs, CO; a sister, Anna Rice of Gas City, IN; two brothers, Russell (Janet) Colyer of Marion, IN and Larry (Joyce) Colyer of Jonesboro, IN; three great grandsons and several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Lawrence and Pheba Colyer; two sisters, Martha (John) Stafford and Phyllis (John) Keeling and Delbert Rice.
Memorial services will be on Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Berean Bible Church in Custer.
Memorials may be made to the Berean Preschool playground or to the Gideons for Bibles.
