IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Kim Douglas
Horkey
June 18, 1953 – March 11, 2024
Kim Douglas Horkey, a remarkable soul who graced this earth with his presence has passed away. A life fully lived, Kim's journey began in 1953 in Windom, Minnesota.
Kim's passion for capturing life's moments through the lens of a camera led him to pursue an Associate Degree in Photography, igniting a lifelong love affair with the art form. As a portrait photographer, Kim had a rare gift for immortalizing the essence of his subjects, showcasing their uniqueness.
Retired, camera in hand, he embarked on a mission to document the wonders of the natural world. From sweeping landscapes to delicate wildflowers, tranquil lakes to meandering rivers, Kim's photographs captured the awe-inspiring beauty that surrounded him. A dedicated supporter of the arts, Kim was a charter member of Art Expressions Gallery in Custer, South Dakota.
Beyond his artistic talents, Kim was known for his kindness, humility, and unwavering faith. He lived by the mantra, "This is a beautiful world that God has given us, so take it all in and give thanks."
In the Black Hills, Kim found solace and inspiration in the majestic landscapes that surrounded him, sharing this passion with his beloved wife of 15 years, Roxanne (Heizler). Their partnership was a testament to love and companionship.
Kim's devotion to family was personified in his two sons from his previous marriage to Margaret (Molitor). Joshua (Hollie) of Ft. Myers, Florida, and Ryan (Katie) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, were not just his children but reflections of his own character, kindness, and talent. Kim took immense pride in his sons and found joy in witnessing them carry forward his legacy through their own families. His grandchildren, Logan and Maysen (Ft. Myers), and Gilbert (Minneapolis), were the light of his life. He delighted in their achievements in hockey, biking, and the culinary arts, finding immense joy in their creativity.
Whether exploring distant lands or cherishing moments with family and friends, Kim embraced life with a sense of wonder and gratitude. Highlighting the rich legacy passed down from his parents, Delton and Delores (Baas) of Windom, Minnesota; with "sawdust in his blood," Kim honed his skills in woodworking, creating pieces channeling his father's spirit.
Survived by his brothers Bruce and Ted of Windom, Minnesota, Jody of Crawford, Nebraska, and Todd of Wabasso, Wisconsin, Kim was cherished by his family for his hearty laugh, silver hair, bright eyes and kind heart. He was a source of joy and inspiration to his many nieces and nephews, leaving an indelible mark on each of their lives.
We grieve his loss. Yet, Kim's spirit lives on in the love, memories, and shared experiences that continue to unite those who were touched by his presence. As we mourn his passing, let us take solace in the knowledge that Kim's spirit will forever reside in the hearts of those who were privileged to know and love him. "Lord, now let thy servant depart in peace". Godspeed.
