Lavona B. Uhl, also known lovingly as "Tudy" by family and childhood friends, passed away on Sunday, November 21, 2010, at the South Dakota State Veterans Home in Hot Springs.
Lavona was born at home on the family farm East of Crawford, Nebraska on June 30, 1926. She attended country school, graduated from Crawford High School, and received a teaching certificate from Chadron State Teachers College known at that time as Chadron Normal. Lavona taught country school for three years during World War II.
Lavona and Donald E. Uhl were married on February 3, 1946, and lived in Nebraska before moving to Hot Springs. Music was an integral part of Lavona's life. She first played the piano for church services at the age of 12 and continued to play for church services until her health declined. Lavona also taught music lessons for many years.
Lavona was a loving, caring, compassionate wife, mother, and friend to all. She had a wonderful sense of humor, loved nature, sunsets, and new adventures.
Lavona was preceded in death by her parents, Alma and Audbur Riddle, and her husband, Donald E. Uhl. Privileged to share her life were many friends and family. She is survived by daughter, Jean A. Hannan and husband, Vernon Max Hannan, daughter, Geraldine L. (Jerri) Church and her husband John Church, and son, George A. Uhl. She is also survived by seven grandchildren – Joel Hannan, Rachel Hannan, David Uhl, Jonathan Uhl, Shellie Hardesty, Mike Strang, Jr., and Jeremy Church; 9 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild.
Services are Friday, November 26, at 10:00 am at the South Dakota State Veterans Home with interment at the cemetery in Crawford, Nebraska.
A memorial has been established in Lavona's name to benefit The Gideons International, P.O. Box 335, Edgemont, SD 57735.
