Obituary

Lawrence Robert Hanson was born at Concordia, Kansas on November 28, 1921 and passed away at Hot Springs, South Dakota on April 18, 2010.

He grew up on a farm homesteaded by his grandfather, Robert Hanson, with a mailing address of Jamestown, Kansas.

His parents were Harvey Peter and Norris Lawrence Colson Hanson.

He attended the District 19 grade school in Buffalo Township and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1940.

After graduation he worked at the farm and on his neighbor's farms until he enlisted in the US Navy on June 1, 1942. He served as an airplane mechanic in England with Fleet Air Wing 7, Patrol Service Units 103 and 112 and was honorably discharged at Norman, Oklahoma on November 26, 1945.

Taking advantage of the GI Bill he attended Kansas State graduating with a BS Degree in Agriculture in 1949.

He married Aurora Lee Lyman at Vale, South Dakota on June 27, 1953. He raised two sons, Robert Edward Hanson of Williston, ND and Lyman Ray Hanson who passed away in 1983. Aurora Lee passed away in 1999.

He spent 30 plus years with the Soil Conservation Service, the Bureau of Reclamation and Bureau of Indian Affairs as a Soil Conservationist in North and South Dakota and retired as a Range Conservationist at Pine Ridge in 1983.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Hot Springs, SD.

He was active in the Masonic Harmony Lodge #110 and the Order of Eastern Star Chapter #22 of Hot Springs, SD and was also a member of the Scottish Rite Masons and Naja Shrine Temple of Deadwood, SD. As a Masonic Volunteer he logged over 6,600 hours of service at the Veterans Administration Hospital and State Soldiers Home during his retirement.

He was thankful for having permanently settled in Hot Springs, SD, the banana belt of the beautiful Black Hills.

He was also thankful for his wife, children, friends, neighbors, strangers and his Church who were always present when needed.

Lawrence is survived by his son, Robert Hanson of Williston, ND.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, April 22, 2010 at the United Churches in Hot Springs with Pastor Morris Nelson officiating.

Interment will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 24, 2010 at the Pleasant Hills Cemetery in Concordia, KS.
