Obituary

Lena Rose Hussey, age 87, passed away July 21, 2014, at her home near Oral, SD.

Lena Rose was born April 2, 1927, in Denver, CO, to Amos and Nancy Janie (Bascoe) Kealiher. She graduated from high school early and went to work for the May Company. Soon after she met the love of her life, Willard Hussey, they got married on April 21, 1946. Their first born son, Eddy, was born in Denver, CO. They moved to Burlington, CO in 1949 to farm. While in Burlington they welcomed three more children-Raymond, David, and Nancy. In 1955, the family moved to Oral, SD on the Angostura Irrigation Project, where she has homesteaded ever since. Shortly after moving to Oral she gave birth to her youngest son, Tim. Lena Rose went to work for the V.A. in 1960 and retired in 1975. She kept very busy with the VFW Auxiliary in Hot Spring, for 35 years she was involved with the post. Lena Rose was adamant about supporting our troops as well as veterans. She was active with the State Home, VA, and VFW, doing bingo, dinners, parades, selling poppy's, shipping care packages to our troops overseas, as well as many other things.

Lena Rose especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She found a love of quilting and embroidering. Everyone in the family has at least one of her highly sought after quilts. She loved to travel. Lena Rose visited Chicago, California, New York City, Bahamas, and many others. While in the Bahamas she went parasailing at the age of 80. She was fearless and stood by her convictions.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, July 24, 2014, at McColley's Chapels of the Hills in Hot Springs.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 25, 2014, at Prairie View Methodist Church near Smithwick, SD, with Rev. Morris Nelson officiating. Interment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery near Oral.

Lena Rose is survived by her four sons, Edwin (Sidney) Hussey of Oral; David (Diane) Hussey of Oral; Raymond (Candy) Hussey of Buffalo Gap, SD; Tim Hussey of Gillette, WY; one daughter, Nancy Hussey of Oral; six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Willard, and all of her siblings.

Memorials in Lena Rose's name may be sent to the Prairie View Methodist Church in care of either the Wrapped In Love Quilt or Bell Garden projects.
