LeRoy James "Roy" Cutler, age 89, of Custer, SD, passed away on September 19, 2017, at Rose Haven Senior Living Center in Custer.
Roy was born on May 9, 1928, in Roubaix, SD, to William Ernest and Violet Mae (Cooper) Cutler. He grew up in Silver City, SD, and went to High School in Rapid City, SD. After graduation, he lived at Pactola Camp while working on the Pactola Reservoir. Roy joined the United States Army in 1950, while stationed in Germany he drove tank, until his honorable discharge in September 1952. After his discharge, he returned to the Black Hills. In April 1964, he went to work at the Black Hills Forest Service during this time he met and worked with a great bunch of Co-workers. Roy fought many forest fires throughout the Black Hills and in many other states. He also implemented watering stations throughout the Black Hills for the wildlife. Roy retired in September 1983, and traveled to different states with his family. In May 2005, he moved to Rose Haven and remained there until the time of his death.
He is survived by his sister, Wilma Rhoades of Custer; brother, Marion Cutler of Lead, SD; sister in law, Jean Cutler Maze, KS; cousins, Dick Cooper of Everette, WA; Patti Cooper of Hinders, NV; nieces and nephews, LaVonna (Steve Maines) Rowlette; Theron (Meredith) Cutler; Lance (Susie) Cutler; Lyle (Angie) Cutler; William, Violet, Kevin Cutler; and great nieces and nephews, Chris, Jesse and Nick Rowlette; Terra, Gage, Ella, Meghan, Cody, and Zane Cutler.
Roy is preceded in death by his brothers, Gail, Neil, Leland and Forest; sister, Marjorie; sister in law, Florence; two uncles, Earl Cooper, Floyd Cooper; cousins, James Cooper and grandnephew, Tyler Rowlette.
Committal services will be held 1:30 p.m., Monday, September 25, 2017, at the Black Hills National Cemetery with Pastor Joel Ziolkowski officiating.
