Lloyd Putnam died at his home surrounded by his family on June 23, 2010 after a short battle with cancer.
Lloyd was born January 26, 1929 in Edgemont, South Dakota, to George G. and Minnie M. (Doran) Putnam. He was the youngest of three children, having an older brother Harry Donald, and an older sister Helen Louise. He was raised on the family ranch homesteaded by his grandfather, located in the Burdock/Dewey, SD area.
Lloyd attended the Burdock and Dewey, SD, grade schools and graduated from Edgemont High School in 1948.
He served in the U. S. Army in occupied Germany from 1951 – 1953. Upon returning from the Army, he entered into the family ranch.
In 1954, he married Beverly Jean Eissler and to this union were born George D. Putnam, Cindy J. Putnam, and John A. Putnam
Lloyd and his mother Minnie operated the ranch from 1954 until 1968 when Minnie sold her interest to Lloyd and Beverly.
Lloyd enjoyed his time with family and friends, and was very content to be at home on the ranch. He had little interest in traveling but found his joy in the land, livestock, and wildlife that surrounded him at home. Like his Dad, he was happiest when the crick ran and he could irrigate alfalfa.
Lloyd was on the Edgemont Rural Fire Board and the Dewey Fire Dept. He had also served on the Argentine Township Board for over five decades.
Lloyd was baptized on May 27, 2010.
He was preceded in death by his parents George G. and Minnie M., his son George D., and his brother and sister.
He is survived by his wife Beverly, daughter Cindy of Hermosa, son John of Dewey, and daughter-in-law Sue of LaCross, WI, grandchildren Jason, Katy, Chester, Miles, Abby, and Dakota Putnam and four great-grandchildren Jared, Jace, Jake, and Amelia Putnam. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was a quiet man who will be missed by his family and friends.
Services will be Monday, June 28, 2010 with 9:00 Mass at the St. James Catholic Church and a Memorial Service at the St. James Parrish Center at 10:00. Burial will follow in the Edgemont Cemetery. You are welcome to attend any or all of the services.
