Lorene Ellen Dickinson, 97, of Hot Springs, SD, passed away August 20, 2010, at the Castle Manor Nursing Home in Hot Springs.
Lorene was born October 28, 1912, in Hale MO, to William and Mary E. (Steele) Whitehead Pierce, and raised by Roy D. and Mary E. Pierce. As a young girl she attended schools in Missouri and Bennett County, SD.
On January 31, 1931, Lorene married Robert H. Dickinson in Tripp County, SD. The couple lived in Tripp County where they farmed until moving to Hot Springs in 1947, where Mr. Dickinson worked at the VA Medical Center and Mrs. Dickinson trained as a surgical technician in Denver, CO and became employed at Lutheran Hospitals and Homes Society in Hot Springs as a surgical and ER Technician from 1954 until her retirement in 1974.
Lorene was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and active in numerous church and hospital activities for many years. She was a spouse of a WW I Veteran. She and Robert had numerous nieces and nephews as well as great and great-great nieces and nephews, whom they loved and enjoyed. Lorene took great pleasure in her family, friends and colleagues and for the patients she cared for over the years at the Lutheran Hospital. She and Robert loved the Black Hills and Yellow Stone National Park, where they often vacationed.
In her elderly years, Lorene was a member of the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home, also residing with her half sister, Dolly Massey for many years until she entered Castle Manor Nursing Home. She lived a long and active life and was loved by her family and will be greatly missed.
Lorene is survived by one brother, Harry (Albia) Whitehead of Hot Springs; one half sister, Marion 'Dolly' Massey of Hot Springs as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Mary (Steele-Pierce) Whitehead and step-father Roy D. Pierce; husband, Robert H. Dickinson; four half brothers, Rollie Whitehead, Charlie Whitehead, Henry Whitehead, Roy 'Sam' Pierce and half sister, Marie (Pierce) Page.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Hot Springs with Fr. Claude Vershure and Rev. Peter Dahlberg officiating.
Interment will be held 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
