Obituary

Lucy Emily Benson, age 92, died Monday, August 13, 2007 at Sturgis Regional Senior Care Center in Sturgis, SD.

Lucy was born December 20, 1914, on the Petty ranch near Hot Springs to Arley and Martha (Kneuple) Petty. They moved to the ranch northwest of Smithwick in 1923 where Lucy and her late sister Edna and late brothers Arley and Carl grew up. She attended Green Valley Grade School and one year of High School in Hot Springs. Lucy married Willard Benson October 21, 1933 in a double ceremony with her sister Edna and Willard's cousin Arthur Olson. The couple first lived on Lucy's father's homestead and in the spring moved to the ranch a mile from her parent's home, where she lived until 1986. Lucy moved to an apartment in the former historic Evans Hotel in Hot Springs. She lived there until her last illness.

Lucy's family and friends enjoyed her pies, cakes, and apple dumplings. She enjoyed tending a garden that supplied her family and friends with strawberries, raspberries, rhubarb and more. Her artistic talent lay hidden until her last decade or two when time allowed her to pursue painting in watercolors to bring animals to life. She enjoyed dinners and outings with niece/sister-in-law, Jean Donnell.

Lucy is survived by two sons, Leonard (Kay) Benson of Oral, SD; Verel (Carol) Benson of Columbia, MO; daughter-in-law, Karen March of Hot Springs, SD; 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren.

Lucy is preceded in death by her daughter Clara, 1967; husband Willard, 1979 and son, Warren (Butch), 1987.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, August 16, 2007 at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs.
