Madge R. Scott, age 100, of Custer, SD, passed away July 10, 2010, at the Weston County Manor in Newcastle, WY.
Madge was born August 14, 1909, in Edgemont, SD, to James Roy and Clara E. (Parkin) Robison. She lived with her parents on a homestead in Niobrara County in WY, and for four years she attended Robinson School on the Cheyenne River in Niobrara Co. At the age of twelve she and her family moved to Edgemont where she attended the rest of her education through her sophomore year at the Edgemont Public School District. Madge then became a beautician, working at a shop in Edgemont. On December 29, 1929, she married Ralph Scott and couple ranched in the Provo, SD area for three years, then Minnekahata for two years and finally to a ranch between Argyle and Ivanhoe in Custer County where they lived for forty-five years. To his union were born two sons, Gerald and Donald. In 1979 she and Ralph then moved to Custer after they retired from ranching.
Madge raised a large garden, canning one hundred quarts each of beans, peas, corn, fruit and meat. Madge also became an accomplished seamstress and learned to crochet and knit. She took piano lessons at a young age and became an accomplished pianist. Madge had a special love for music and entertained herself, as well as others, until she was ninety-seven. A broken arm slowed her down and at ninety-eight she lost her ability to play due to a dislocated shoulder.
Madge was a member of the Custer Senior Citizens, Rebecca Lodge in Edgemont, a seventy-five year member of the Minnekahata Valley Ladies Club, and a member of the Custer Historical Society where she volunteered at the museum during the summer.
Madge had a special love for her family and friends. She loved to travel and at ninety-one she made a trip to Branson, MO.
Madge is survived by two sons, Gerald Scott of Custer; Donald (Connie) Scott of Newcastle; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Madge is preceded in death by her husband, parents, an infant son and sister, Fern Hey; and one grandson.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at McColley's Chapel of the Hills of the Hills in Hot Springs, SD, with Pastor John McKnight and Pastor Mick Bohn officiating. Interment will follow at the Edgemont Cemetery in Edgemont, SD.
