Margaret 'Toots' (Heumphreus) Schriner, age 89, passed away November 8, 2013, at the Custer Regional Hospital in Custer.
Toots Heumphreus was born at 12 Mile Ranch, Custer, SD, on November 3, 1924, to Ford and Helen (Corcoran) Heumphreus. She was raised on the ranch and went to a rural school for her elementary grades. Her Junior High years were spent in Rapid City and her High Schools years in Custer where she was graduated in 1941. Toots got her degree in education from Spearfish Normal and taught in country schools, Pleasant Valley, Dewey and McClelland. She taught the remainder of her thirty-nine year teaching career in Custer Public Schools. She retired in 1983, but continued as a substitute teacher for the next thirteen years. Toots was married to Ed Schriner in 1947 at 12 Mile Ranch and they ranched for many years in Pleasant Valley. She loved 12 Mile Ranch and strove to maintain its history and integrity. She was a true pioneer woman. She was known as a welcoming and hospitable neighbor and enjoyed telling the history of 12 Mile Ranch to many visitors. Toots was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Pleasant Valley Club, and the Custer Museum Committee.
Toots was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Pat Richtman; her aunt and uncles and her husband, Ed. She is survived by two nieces, Linda Boner of Rapid City and Susan Barnes of Custer as well as several great nieces, nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews and cousins Joe and Mary Heumphreus and Clare Hancock. She is also survived by a multitude of friends, especially Nancy, Larry, Teresa, Frances, Margaret and Charlene.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, November 14, 2013, at the Custer Community Church in Custer, with Pastor Bill Comfort officiating. Interment will follow at the Custer Cemetery.
A memorial has been established to the Custer County Courthouse Museum.
