Mark 'Doc' Helgerson

Mark "Doc" Helgerson, age 74, of Custer, South Dakota, passed away at his home on August 14, 2025.

Doc was born July 11, 1951, in Yankton, South Dakota. He lived a life full of hard work, humor, and heart. He was happiest when helping others, spending time in the woods "killing trees," or surrounded by the dogs and pets he loved. Doc was deeply loyal to his friends and family, and he carried a gift for making people feel welcome and cared for.

He is survived by his son Aaron (Traci); his sister Carrie; his brother Paul (Sharon); two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also remembered with love by his brother Rick Wheeler and his many friends, specifically the crew at French Creek Supply in Custer.

A celebration of his life and potluck will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at the 1881 Courthouse Museum, 411 Mt. Rushmore Road, Custer, South Dakota. Family and friends are invited to bring a dish, share stories, and join together to honor Doc's memory.
