Mark Karl Otiker, age 51, of Custer, SD, passed away August 25, 2011, at Custer Regional Hospital.
Mark was born March 29, 1960, in McHenry, Illinois to Victor and Dorothy May (Roder) Otiker. He spent his early childhood in McHenry, IL where he attended elementary school. His family moved around quite a bit. He also attended schools in Kansas, Arizona and Custer, SD, where he attended Custer Junior High. His mom and dad moved from Custer in the early 80's to Globe, AZ. Mark graduated from Apache Junction High School in 1978 and took a forestry course through the mail for additional education. Mark worked in the mechanic field for several years at Cobra Valley Motors in Globe, AZ and was employed for 21 years at Murner Chevrolet in Custer.
On April 25, 1993, Mark was united in marriage with Rhonda Foran at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church by Pastor Robert Anderson. While Mark never adopted her children, Jim, Janice and Gary, he thought of them as his and they considered him their dad and their children his grandkids.
Mark enjoyed singing and was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Gospel Choir for several years. He was an avid member of band in school playing trumpet both in Custer High School and Apache Junction, lettering in band there. He was an avid fisherman, liked metal detecting, oil painting and sketching old buildings and scenery. Mark liked classic cars and was a member of Cool Pines Cruisers for a few years. He was also a member of the NRA since junior high and enjoyed target practicing. He enjoyed working with wood and was a member of National Handyman Club of America as well as National Fisherman's Club of America. He was liked by practically everyone he knew and will be missed by all.
Survivors include his wife, Rhonda Otiker of Custer; step-sons, James (Amber) Serfoss of Douglas, WY; Gary Serfoss of Rapid City, SD; step-daughter, Janice (Eric) Rothleutner of Pringle, SD; Aunt, Virginia Fuechssteiner of New Glarus, WI; four grandchildren, Cassie Rothleutner; Cole Rotheutner; Samantha Serfoss and Justin Serfoss; cousins, Allen Roder of Lyndon, IL and Carolyn (Jim) Ziebert of Sandwich, IL
He was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson, Tyrell Rothleutner.
Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, September 1, 2011, at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 2, 2011 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Custer with Pastor Steve Wagner and Pastor Robert Anderson officiating. Interment will follow at the Custer Cemetery.
