Martha P. Haden, age 91, of Hot Springs, passed away September 20, 2010 at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home in Hot Springs.
She was born February 5, 1919, to Milda and Thomas Augustine in Dawes County, Chadron, NE. Her parents lived on Dry Creek northeast of Chadron where Martha grew up and attended Dry Creek School for eight years. She attended Chadron High School and Chadron State College where she received her BS in Education. She started her teaching career in 1940 in a rural school near Chadron. She later taught at the Kenwood School in Chadron and a school in Chappell, NE.
On June 17, 1946, Martha and Raymond Haden were married at the ranch home near Chadron. In the fall of 1958, Martha started teaching third grade in the Hot Springs Elementary School which is now the Pioneer Museum. She taught for 24 years before retiring in 1982. One of her fellow teachers was quoted as saying "Martha was a teacher who taught reading with a dedication like no other. If you had Mrs. Haden for a teacher, there was no doubt that you were going to read when you came out of her room. She believed that children should learn manners and respect for others and it was practiced in her room at all times".
She loved working in her flower and vegetable gardens. She made live and artificial flower table arrangements for the Senior Citizens Center for many years. She was very active in Eastern Star, Westerners, Retired Teachers Association, a life member of PTO, and supported the Mammoth Site.
Survivors include her two sons, Ken (Sue) Haden of Hot Springs and Gerald (Kathi) Haden of Canyon Lake, TX; four grandchildren, Scott (Denise) Haden of Hot Springs; Shelly Lemery of Hot Springs; Laura (Raymond) Yates and Leah Haden of Canyon Lake, TX; and eight great grandchildren, Zack, Skyler, and Josie Haden; Kaley and Lane Lemery; Vienna and Gary Yates and Silus Haden.
