Martha Janet Porter, 85, of Edgemont, SD, passed away February 28, 2021, at Seven Sisters Living Center in Hot Springs, SD.

Janet was born September 13, 1935, in Oral, SD; to George B. and Mary Viola (Evans) Evans.   She was born a twin with sister, Mary Janiece.   The family was already large with 9 children in the family and they were the talk of the countryside for awhile, "what would George and Mary do with two more children"?   Janet recalls her parents managed to love and feed all of them, in spite of the neighbor's talk.

In 1953, Janet met and married Melvin Porter, a rancher who had just been discharged from the Army the fall before, and to their union 3 children were born, Lucille; Kenny and Everett.  During Janet's high school years she worked at the State Veterans Home during school vacations.  When her children attended school, she drove the school bus.  She also worked at the Senior Center, Cactus Hills and Dutoits Grocery Store.     She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and spent many years as a Leader of the Cheyenne Rangers 4-H club.   Janet attended church in her childhood and remained a faithful member her entire life.  If you wanted to find Janet, just go to Bingo at the Senior Center or one of the many rummage sales at the Edgemont United Church or American Legion, where she could always be found lending a helping hand. Janet had an ear for music and she and Melvin had a passion for cutting a rug on the dance floor.

Janet is survived by her son, Everett of Edgemont; daughter, Lucille Decker of Edgemont; 7 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren.

Janet is predeceased by her parents, her husband, Melvin, her son, Kenneth and her siblings, Elizabeth; Patricia; Cora; Mary Janiece; Laneta; Evelyn; Georgia; Marietta; George and John.

Visitation will be held 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Friday, March 5, 2021 at Chamberlain McColley's Funeral Home in Hot Springs, SD.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 6, 2021, at United Church of Edgemont in Edgemont, SD with Reverend Dr. Ed Coates officiating.   Committal service will follow at Edgemont Cemetery.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Chamberlain McColley's Funeral Home in Hot Springs, SD.
