IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mary Catherine
Hagenson
May 23, 1923 – May 4, 2014
Mary Catherine (Yanz) Hagenson, age 90, died May 4, 2014, at her home near Hot Springs, SD.
She graduated from Hastings High School in Minnesota, and was educated as a nurse at St. Catherine University. She also graduated from the United States Army Nurse Corps.
She met her husband, Leo, while serving as a registered nurse at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. The two were inseparable partners in life and business. Having grown up in the Depression era, Mary Catherine kept a tight rein on finances and could sense a bargain 50 miles away.
They moved from Hastings, MN, to Grantsburg, WI, in 1958, where Leo's invention, the Rollite trailer, was manufactured. In 1971, they moved to Kenyon, MN, and in 1977 to Hot Springs for the area's natural beauty. Here, they founded Eagle Mats.
Mary Catherine was blessed with three children, two of whom preceded her in death – Michael Hagenson and Mary Sue Hagenson.
Mary Catherine has been a devoted member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church where she served as a Catholic Daughter. A member of the Hot Springs Travelers Club, she loved traveling and had been to every state, as well as Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, the British Isles and Europe. On her way home from one trip she was always planning the next trip. Despite her notorious penny pinching, she always hid cash in the sugar bowl for future trips.
Mary Catherine was civic-minded and generous to those in need. Her charitable interests included St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church and the Black Hills Workshop in Rapid City.
An avid gardener, her hobbies also included flower pressing and sewing.
Wake services will be held 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Hot Springs. Mary Catherine is survived by her husband, Leo of Hot Springs; son, Richard Hagenson of Northfield, MN; brother, John Yanz of Hastings, MN; sister, Gretchen Yanz of Fairbault, MN; five grandchildren and one great grandson.
