Obituary

Mary Edna Foree Smith, age 101, passed away October 28, 2016, at the Seven Sisters Living Center in Hot Springs.

She was born to Lee Foree and Lulu Hulbert Foree on Sept. 14, 1915, in Custer. She, her parents, two sisters and a brother along with all of their earthly possessions, moved from South Dakota to Arriola, Colorado in 1921 in a covered wagon. They camped near Native American settlements while her father worked in the orchards and on farms. Two years later they settled in Grand Junction where Mary graduated from high school in 1934.

While living in Grand Junction, she met Urby Smith and married him on January 30, 1935, at the age of 19. World War II found the couple living in California and Urby supporting the war effort working in the docks at Los Angeles. One son, Urby Duane, was born to them while they lived there. After the war, they returned to Grand Junction and eventually moved to Hot Springs to stay in 1952.

Mary was a soda jerk at Dites Drug Store, a clerk at Coast to Coast and a cook at the State Home as well as caring for various children after she retired. Mary often said she enjoyed the children so much, she thought she should be the one paying for the privilege of caring for them. She believed with all her heart in the saving grace of God's love and truly lived that faith. She was perpetually positive, was quick to laugh and genuinely found blessings even in struggles. She was a long time member of Evans Plunge, exercising regularly until just recently. Mary loved to travel and was always up for an adventure. She cherished time spent studying the Bible and was a long time member of the Hot Springs Seventh-day Adventist church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Urby, her parents, Lee and Lulu, as well as her siblings, Hazel, Howard and Lulu and her daughter-in-law, Evie Smith.

She is survived by her son Duane as well as grandsons Brad (Courtney), Jeff (Tammy) and Tim and great grandchildren, Anna and Connor. In her honor, please do something kind for someone and whisper a prayer of thanks to God for the life and strength he gave her.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 26, at 3:00 at the Hot Springs Seventh-day Adventist church.
