Mason M. Miller, 86, Edgemont, SD died Friday, February 15, 2008 at the VA Medical Center in Hot Springs, SD.
Mason was born November 22, 1921 to Mason and Carrie Miller, Sr. in Edgemont. He grew up on a ranch south of Edgemont, attended school in Edgemont and then was a roughneck in the Wyoming oil fields until being drafted into the US Army in 1942. He returned home after World War II and went to work on various ranches in the Edgemont area and trained horses. On October 14, 1948 he married Helen Ball. They lived south of Provo, SD until 1952 when they moved to their present home. Mason spent his life raising cattle, breaking horses and especially liked working with draft horses. He spent many a winter morning hitching up the team, pitching hay on the wagon and feeding cows. Up until five years ago he was still mowing the county road ditches with his team. Mason was the local brand inspector for 48 years. He has served as Commander of the American Legion in Edgemont for several years and has also been a member of the South Dakota Stockgrowers, Edgemont Senior Citizens and local Sportsman's Club.
Mason was preceded in death by a son, Mike Miller and six older sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Helen of 59 years; brother, Ralph (Bernice) Edgemont; daughter, Marie (Keith) Andersen and son, Jim (Barb) Miller both of Edgemont; his very special grandchildren, Carrie Andersen of Minneapolis, MN; Clint Andersen of Sheridan, WY; Brett Andersen of Edgemont; and Angie (Mike) Tinker of St Paul, MN; Sheila (Justin) Chester of Aurora, CO and Shane Miller of Spirit Lake, IA.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the United Church in Edgemont.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Church with Rev. Floyd and Rev. Norma Mills officiating. Interment will follow at the Edgemont Cemetery near Edgemont.
A memorial has been established in Mason's name to benefit the Edgemont YMCA and the Edgemont Ambulance Service.
