Merietta W. 'Rita' Kranzler, age 91, of Custer, SD, passed away Sunday, April 10, 2011, at Custer Regional Hospital in Custer.
Rita was born January 12, 1920, in Freedom, OK, to Robert and Effie (Fix) Ewing. She attended elementary schools in Missouri, Indiana, Nebraska and Arizona. She graduated high school in 1938 in Los Angeles, CA. After graduating high school she attended the Los Angeles Business College. On March 7, 1947 she married Freddrick Kranzler in Carson City, NV. Rita was a resident of Custer since 1953. From October 1962 until February 1985 she was employed at the Hot Springs Veterans Administration Medical Center as a secretary bookkeeper. Rita also worked at the Custer Community Hospital for 22 years, retiring in December 2010.
Rita loved her work and her home, she was proud of her children and grandchildren. She loved to knit and crochet items for children and babies. She also loved music and trained to be an opera singer.
She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge, VFW Auxiliary, Fidelis Club at Custer Community Church and the South Dakota Branch of the American Medical Records Association.
Survivors include her sons, Robert (Marilyn) Carrico of Folsom, CA; Jerry (Jean) Kranzler of Urbandale, IA; daughter, Jeanne (Ronald) McLemore of Spearfish, SD; sixteen grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; mother, step-father; son, Jimmy, daughter, Carol Hokanson; and sister, Josephine Winkenbach.
Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at Custer Community Church in Custer with Pastor Bill Comfort officiating.
Interment will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
A memorial has been established in Rita's name to benefit the Custer Community Church Music Fund or Scholarship Fund.
