Michael "Mick" Hindman passed away April 9, 2023, surrounded by his wife and kids.  Mick was born on March 17, 1947, in Plymouth Indiana to Louise and Elson "Babe" Hindman.  He is survived by his loving wife, Shana, and his children Chad of Eagle-Vale, CO, Chis (Larissa) of Fairbanks AK, Todd (Sylvia) Utecht of Eagan, MN, Mechelle (David) Powers of Wildwood, MO, Jennifer (Jay) Miller of Laramie, WY and his sister Linda (Don) Querry of Wheatland, WY.  He has seven grandchildren: Sarah, Chance, Isaac, Riley, Caden, Sam and Colton.

Mick was a lifelong learner.  His love of medicine ignited in the Air Force as a medic.  He graduated from the nursing program at UND after the service; immediately went into the brand new dual certified Physician Assistant-Nurse Practitioner program (1976). As a PA he stopped counting deliveries at 200. He practiced in several small towns all around the country including Beach ND, Edgemont SD, Hill City SD, White River, SD, Sundance, WY, and Cuba, NY. Mick attended a yearlong intensive internship at the LA County hospital in California after serving the 10-bed hospital in Custer, SD. ER was his favorite, so he often traveled to do ER coverages in small hospitals all over the Midwest. He craved a deeper understanding of medicine so at 47 he enrolled in an MD program at Saba University in the Caribbean and became a family practice physician from the University of Wisconsin Residency program (June 30, 2000). In that residency he did a six-week foreign assignment in Kosovo during the war there with the International Medical Corp.  After graduating he worked in the ER of the Faith Regional Hospital in Norfolk, NE before opening a series of private urgent cares in NE.

If there was good music playing Mick and Shana danced (often to the dismay of their children). Hobbies included making wine and sharing it in the orchard, tying flies, fly fishing, pheasant hunting with Buddy his best friend, listening to jazz and hugging all his "kids" from his family or his practice.  He loved to cook and specialized in family fish boils.  He gardened, cross-country skied, and shared all his hobbies with his sons, daughters and grandchildren every chance he could.

He always encouraged his grandkids to experiment and learn.  He was an avid supporter, going to hockey games, dance recitals, school plays, baseball, basketball and football games, band concerts, 4-H fairs, and parades where he could show off his '42 chevy truck and share its' particular story.

His best advice to everyone he met was "love as hard as you can for as long as you can".

A Celebration of Mick's Life will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 14, 2023, at Chamberlain McColley Funeral Home in Custer, SD.
